JULY 12TH 2012 LOCAL BIRDING

ENCINAS BORRACHES TRACK

No photographs - some dip stick left his camera at home!!!!!!

A lovely early morning walk in beautiful sunny weather, a little bit breezy later but that was welcomed. I met Paul outside my house at 7am and we drove out of the village onto the Ronda road. We collected American John along the way.

Thus, 3 amigos walked along the Borraches track at 7:30am, it was wonderful, plenty of birds about and a beautiful bright day. Many species had young and the newly fledged Black-eared Wheatear chicks caused a bit of a stir, hard to identify until they fly off and show their tail pattern. There was also many juvenile Woodchat Shrikes, Southern Grey Shrikes, Corn Buntings and Goldfinches.

Thekla Larks, Green Sandpiper (at the man-made pool) Spotted Flycatcher, Little Owl, Rock Sparrow, a brief view of a Dartford Warbler (Paul only), lots of Spectacled Warblers in family parties;  all were added to the list and seen well.

Further along the track we found Red-legged Partridges, Orphean Warbler, Woodlark, Bonelli's Warbler and high up on the limestone ridges we saw Blue Rock Thrush, Black Wheatear, Red-billed Chough,  and a probable Rock Bunting. Although the sky was generally devoid of raptors (it usually is here for some unknown reason) we did managed to see a family party of Common Kestrels and a couple of Short-toed Eagles.

Other wildlife included Spanish Ibex and Red Deer and on the way back to the car we saw many butterflies. Some nice species were noted: Striped Grayling, Great Banded Grayling, Tree Grayling, Sage Skipper, Adonis Blue, Bath White, Silver Studded Blue, Clouded Yellow, Spanish gatekeeper and Small Heath.

We returned to village at 12 noon, the temperature was over 30C by then, time to seek shade, a cool drink and my book! It's a hard life out here.
