MAY 11TH - DAY 7 OF ANDALUCIA 7-DAY TOUR

RIO GENAL - PUNTA UMBRIA WOODLAND WALK

Our last full day of the trip was taken at a slow steady pace, we had traveled a lot over the last few days and we needed any easy day today.

Our pre-breakfast outing was made down to the local river some 15 minutes drive away. The air was alive with bird song as we arrived at dawn. Blackcap, Chaffinch, European Robin, Cetti's Warbler and Common Nightingale were all having a go!

We walked for a 100 meters or so and soon heard our target species the Golden Oriole, it wasn't long before we had some quick views and after a while we all had great scope views of a male. Other birds seen were a Sparrowhawk, Honey Buzzard and a few Griffon Vultures.

After breakfast we spent the rest of birding in the oak woodland around Punta Umbria, it was a frustrating time we heard many species but found it very hard to see them. We did see Blackcap, European Robin, and we had fleeting views of Bonelli's Warbler and Iberian Chiffchaff.

One good sighting was off a flock of 30+ Honey Buzzards, they circled very high up over the hillside before drifting off to the north.

By 1pm it was getting quite hot, so we made our way back to the village where we took a leisurely tapas lunch. The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing in the village or on the terrace. The birding was over, we had seen a great number of species and seen some lovely areas of Andalucia.

Dinner was taken at our favourite restaurant in the village and we all agreed that had had a wonderful week of birding.
