DAY TOUR - APRIL 13TH (FRIDAY!!!!) 2012

DESENBOCADURA de GUADALHORCE & SIERRA CRESTELLINA

Not quite a day-tour as it was just a quick visit to the Guadalhorce after I collected Ivan and Muriel from Malaga Airport. The two of them will be joining me and four others this Sunday 15th on a 7-day tour of Andalucia.

We spent about 2 hours walking round the reserve in strong winds and bright skies, it did cloud over later.

At the mouth of the western arm of the river we saw very little: Monk Parakeet, Barn Swallow, Red-rumped Swallow and House Martin so we walked up river to the bridge and walked over to the ponds. From the hides we enjoyed seeing many White-headed Ducks, Gadwall, Common Pochard, Moorhen and Coot. At the Laguna Grande we saw Spoonbill, Black-necked Grebe, Common and Little Ringed Plovers and a nice surprise was two Collared Pratincoles. A group of 4 Whiskered Terns, some Audouin's Gulls, Pallid Swifts, Sand Martins and Woodchat Shrikes made up the list to 40+.

We drove towards Gaucin via Casares and stopped at Sierra Crestellina where we added Griffon Vulture and several Black Kites to our list. Corn Bunting, Stonechat, Serin, Greenfinch and Goldfinch were also seen, the wind remained quite strong and made it difficult for viewing - so we gave up and went on to Gaucin.
