An early morning excursion found us at El Colmenar just after 8am. We stood for 40 minutes watching to see which species landed in the 'famous' dead tree near the electricity generating station. In the past I have recored 15 species in this dead tree but today it was disappointing. We only saw half a dozen Collared Doves, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Spotless Starlings and 3 Hawfinches. In the scrub around us we found Blackcap, Sardinian Warbler, Blue Tit and we heard both Great-spotted and Green Woodpeckers calling in the distance. On the way back to Gaucin we spotted a Jay, Stonechat and a Spotted Flycatcher.
The rest of the day was spent travelling to and from Campillos via Ronda. We stopped a couple of times along the way where we watched Griffon Vultures, Honey Buzzards, a few Crag Martins and we saw a flock of Corn Buntings.
Squirting Cucumber - if you touch the ripe seed pods they detach from the stem with an explosive action whilst squirting liquid from the pod containing seeds. |
The water level was quite low on the laguna Dulce but it was still full of birds. We logged 37 species in or around the water, the best of which were: Black Tern, Montagu's Harrier, White-headed Duck, Black-necked Grebe, Yellow Wagtail, Little Stint, Wood Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper and hundreds of Greater Flamingos. A flock of 63 White Storks dropped in whilst we were there, it was great to see them 'fall' from the sky.
Later we drove around to the fields at the back of the laguna where we found a dozen or so Northern Wheatears and a single Tawny Pipit. We finshed the day early so that everyone could have time to explore the village a little before dinner.
