WEATHER - DRY SUNNY AND HOT ALL DAY. FANTASTIC CLEAR NIGHTS WITH SUPERB STARLIT SKIES
We tried the canopy walkway for
second time, hoping for more activity in the morning hours, we were all
assembled on the platform by 6:30am waiting in anticipation. The bird-rush
never came, in fact it was far more quiet than yesterday. We all got much
better views of Great Jacamar and we saw Dusky Purpletuft once again but not
much else. So we decided to walk down the track and out to the main road where
we had large areas of cleared forest on either side of the road. It was so much
better and soon we were logging good bird sightings. Blackish Nightjars were a
nice find as was a mixed flock of Tanagers that held a new species for us, the
Turquoise Tanager. Another special find was a Pompadour Cotinga and later a pair of
Spangled Cotingas.
BIRDING THE 'MAIN' ROAD |
HELLICONIA SP |
We took a different track back to
the lodge and bumped into a mixed feeding flock, there Honeycreeper, tanagers,
antbirds and woodcreepers but the best by far was the Chestnut Woodpecker, what
a stunner and our tenth woodpecker of the trip.
After a long lunch we once again
took the track back to the main road but this time we turned north instead of
south, the terrain was much the same with some open grassy areas and some swamp
areas on the forest edge. Again it was extremely quiet and before long we
decided to turn back and watch from the lodge gardens. We did see a few species
of parrots and some macaws, a couple of Little Chacalacas crossed the main
track lots of Silver-beaked Tanagers flitted about.
BLACK CARACARA |
Back in the gardens of the lodge
we found a couple of Black-bellied Cuckoos and a Three-toed Sloth but we didn’t
record much else. The much wanted Crimson Fruitcrow never appeared once. Just
before dusk we made a second attempt to see the White-tailed Potoo, this time
the bird made a very brief flyover but failed to land on its favourite perch,
so again we went away disappointed.
